Well. That was a hot mess. Thank God we won.
Despite the fact that they were outshot 33-27, and despite the fact that they lost more face-off battles than they won, the Blackhawks managed to pull a win out of their collective behinds. How did they manage that?
- Turco looked pretty darn good tonight, stopping 29 of 33 shots. The first goal was the only softie he gave up on the night, as far as I could tell. Even though he looked shaky at times, some of the stops he made on point-blank shots and breakaways gave the Blackhawks confidence.
- 5 out of 5 penalties killed, including a 5-on-3. For a team that came into the game 27th in penalty killing, this was HUGE.
- 7 different goal scorers: Leddy, Keith, Stalberg, Kane, Toews, Bolland, and Hossa with the empty-netter.
- Toews with this beautiful short-handed goal, which was definitely the back-breaker. After that, Steve Mason was chased from net, and the Blue Jackets were never much of a threat.
What was bad about this game, besides what I noted above? The puck bounced around like a SuperBall, and the defense seemed to take micro-naps, as usual. Boynton continues to defy reason with his terrible play. (Poor little Nick Leddy being paired with that guy — talk about a trial by fire.) It was a sloppy game, but the Blackhawks come away with two points and denied a division rival any points. Pretty much what they needed to start off this road trip.
Duncan Keith plus/minus rating watch: +1.
