Post-Game Review: Blackhawks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Blackhawks defeat the Penguins 3-2 in a shootout.

There’s a lot of negatives I could pull out of this win but a lot of them I mentioned in the last review, so here’s my analysis.

Two points.

Because really at the end of the day that’s all that matter.

But in all seriousness, these were two big points that the Blackhawks needed to pick up and they did. Thankfully they gave an extra point to an Eastern Conference team rather than a Western Conference team chasing a playoff spot as well. The 3rd period letdowns though really need to stop.

__

Captain Force of Nature watch: 1 assist, a -1 with 4 shots. A fantastic of 15-22 (68%) from the faceoff dot. He missed on his shootout attempt and looked none too pleased with the shootout win.  The first line of Toews with Kane and Sharp was again the best line for the Hawks.

Duncan Keith plus/minus rating watch: Even

Coach Q face color watch: Not applicable. Thankfully the Blackhawks managed to get the two points, so hopefully he’s a nice healthy color.

NBC ran a stat at the start of the 3rd saying that we’ve let in the most 3rd period goals than any other team this season. That’s pretty damn scary. Definitely has to be something Quenneville and Haviland have to be drumming into their head to try and prevent in this last stretch of the season.

2 points is 2 points though, and as you said, at least it’s an Eastern team we’re giving the 1 to.

Point I have to make though: I’ve seen a lot of Penguins fans saying they expected this game to be a blowout win for the Blackhawks. I have to say to them: they’re absolutely crazy. Injury stack or not, there’s a good reason Wilkes-Barre/Scranton are top of the AHL and running away with it, and their players stepping up tonight certainly showed that they’re quite ready to make the step up and that they’re no pushovers.

That, and Marc-Andre Fleury being an absolute beast after getting peppered in the first for about 15-20 shots on goal. I don’t know how some people have blamed him for the lose, when he kept them in the competition all game.
