The Blackhawks have acquired the negotiating rights to defenseman Steve Montador from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for the seventh-round draft pick in 2012 or 2013 that the Blackhawks received in exchange for Tomas Kopecky’s negotiating rights.

The team receives the right to negotiate exclusively with Montador until noon ET on July 1st, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He made $1.5 million last year, and is set for a raise after setting a career high in assists (21) and points (26). He also blocked 136 shots for Buffalo and was a +16 on the season while averaging 19:03 TOI.
