According to a report from Sportsnet, Steve Montador signed a four-year, $11 million contract with the Blackhawks. The cap hit is $2.75 million per year. Last year with the Buffalo Sabres, he set a career high in assists (21) and points (26). He also blocked 136 shots and was a +16 on the season while averaging 19:03 TOI.
This year’s free agent market is a good one for defensemen and their salaries. Not enough d-men on the market plus a high demand for them means that teams will be paying a bit more than normal. Therefore, while Montador’s price tag might seem a bit high, it is on par with what other teams would probably offer for his services.
Edit: According to Chris Kuc via his Twitter, the signing is now official. The initially-reported numbers are also correct — $11 million over four years, for a $2.75 million/year cap hit.
