Ben Smith Sent Down To Rockford

This isn't the last we've seen of Smitty. (Photo: Cheryl Adams/flickr)

In a move that seems to have surprised a lot of Blackhawks fans, Ben Smith was assigned to the Rockford IceHogs. Smith hasn’t appeared in any regular-season games this season and hasn’t played ever since he was hit by Brendan Smith on September 28 during a preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings.

This was a tough decision for the Blackhawks, but it makes sense. If a team can send a player down to the minors without having to worry about waivers, why not use that to send him for further rehabilitation after an injury? I don’t expect this to be a permanent move for Smith and wish him well on his recovery.
