This afternoon, the IceHogs announced that they signed defenseman Ben Youds to a one year AHL contract for the 2012-13 season.
In his rookie season with the Hogs, he posted 17 points (4G, 13A) in 57 games and was a +1. He also racked up 60 penalty minutes and 83 shots on goal.
Youds won the IceHogs’ team award for “Most Improved Player” in 2011-12. The Maple Grove, Minnesota native was a healthy scratch 18 times in the first 45 games of the year–he also had a brief stay in Toledo with the Walleye of the ECHL from December 26-29–and was presented a huge opportunity for more ice time when Brian Connelly was traded on January 27 to the Calgary Flames organization.
He took the chance and ran with it as he played in all of the remaining 31 games and made a big impact with the club as he became a reliable blueliner for head coach Ted Dent and the rest of the coaching staff. The 24-year-old was used on the power play, the penalty kill, and received top four D minutes on a nightly basis.
