Walleye Monday: Hotter Than Turkey Gravy

First off, apologies for missing Walleye Monday last week  – I know all 7 of you regular readers were heartbroken. I actually moved last Monday, meaning my computer and my brain weren’t completely hooked up until mid-week. Damn you real life!

The Walleye have actually done very well since I last wrote a post – perhaps this is a sign? Anyway, after the break enjoy catching up on the last two weeks of Walleye hockey. Now in bullet point form with a bonus highlights video so you don’t poke your eyes out by the end of the post!

11/16/12 – Toledo Walleye 2, Fort Wayne Komets 1: This was the Walleye’s first trip to Fort Wayne this season…Jordan Pearce got the start in net for Toledo, Ken Reiter was in goal for the Komets…the game was scoreless until the third period when Terry Broadhurst and Joey Martin scored in the first 4:11 of the period, both on the power play…Captain Colin Chaulk scored with 1:53 left to make things interesting for the Komets…Toledo had the edge in shots, 32-30…Fort Wayne’s Daniel Maggio was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for cross-checking Toledo’s Byron Froese in the face – he received a cross-checking major and a game misconduct during the game for his trouble

11/17/12 – Toledo Walleye 6, Wheeling Nailers 1: Kent Simpson and Patrick Kileen were the goalies for the Walleye and Nailers respectively…Kyle Rogers scored just 58 seconds into the game to get the scoring going for the Walleye…Willie Coetzee and Luke Glendening had two goals apiece for Toledo and Byron Froese added a power play marker…one of Glendening’s goals came shorthanded…Froese had a 3-point night (1G, 2A)…Wheeling’s Scott Zurevinski spoiled the shutout for Simpson, scoring with just 1:48 left…The Nailers actually outshot Toledo, 24-23

11/21/12 – Toledo Walleye 4, Cincinnati Cyclones 2: Zoltan Hetenyi was in net for the Cyclones, Jordan Pearce got the start for Toledo…David MacDonald of Cincinnati scored the first goal of the game at 5:16…the Walleye followed with four unanswered goals – Willie Coetzee and Luke Glendening tallied in the first, Benny Youds and Bryon Froese (on a shorthanded breakaway) scored in the second…Jonathan Hazen scored with just 33 seconds left in the third for the Cyclones…Cincinnati outshot the Walleye 37-25 – Pearce made 17 saves in the first period alone

11/23/12 – Cincinnati Cyclones 4, Toledo Walleye 2: Brian Foster and Kent Simpson were the starting goalies…Cincinnati scored the first three goals of the game and led 3-0 at the start of the third period…Benny Youds and Randy Rowe both scored in the third, sandwiching a Cyclones goal by David Pacan…Toledo and Cincinnati each scored two goals on the power play…the Walleye actually outshot the Cyclones 24-19, yet lost

11/24/12 – Toledo Walleye 4, Fort Wayne Komets 2: Charlie Effinger and Jordan Pearce got the starts between the pipes…Toledo’s Terry Broadhurst scored the only goal in the first period, at 1:53…Matt Firman scored a shorthanded goal in the second to tie the game at one…Luke Glendening added a power play tally in the second to regain the lead for Toledo…Willie Coetzee and Andrej Nestrasil (empty net) scored in the third, putting the game away…the Walleye edged the Komets in shots, 27-25…Pearce has won his last five starts

11/25/12 – Toledo Walleye 3, Kalamazoo Wings 2: Joel Martin was in net for K-Zoo, with Kent Simpson getting the start for Toledo…the Wings’ Kory Karlander scored 7:56 into the game on the power play, the only goal in the first period…defenseman Phil Oreskovic scored his first of the year in the second to tie the game at one…Max Campbell and K-Zoo’s John Negrin traded goals early in the third to knot the game at two…the Walleye pulled out the win, with Phil Rauch scoring on an unassisted breakaway with just two minutes left in regulation…the Walleye outshot the Wings, 40-27…Toledo’s unbeaten in regulation streak on the road is eight games, a Walleye record (7-0-0-1)

Blackhawks Prospects Update: Byron Froese is second on the team with 17 points (5G, 12A) and has a +9….Benny Youds has 13 points (3G, 10A)…Terry Broadhurst has 12 points (3G, 9A)…Kent Simpson is 4-5-0-1 on the season with a 2.50 GAA and a .899 SV%

The Week Ahead: The Walleye are at home on Friday, November 30th vs the Kalamazoo Wings and Saturday, December 1st vs the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Walleye visit Evansville on Sunday December 2nd to take on the IceMen. Saturday night’s game is the annual Teddy Bear Toss, with all stuffed animals being donated to Lucas County Children’s Services. SO TOSS SOME TEDDYS, DAMMIT!

Current Standings: North Division – 1) Toledo Walleye, 23 points (19 GP), 2) Cincinnati Cyclones, 22 points (16 GP), 3) Kalamazoo Wings, 18 points (18 GP), 4) Fort Wayne Komets, 17 points (16 GP),  5) Evansville IceMen, 13 points (19 GP). I’m ignoring the games played stat and enjoying this while I can.

Stats-O-Rama: Willie Coetzee leads the team with 18 points (9G, 9A) …Luke Glendening has ten goals on the season…Byron Froese leads the team with 12 assists…Max Campbell is tied for 4th in the league with a +10…Jordan Pearce leads the Walleye with a 5-1-0-0 record, a 2.34 GAA and .914 SV%…Froese and Glendening both have 2 shorthanded goals…Andrej Nestrasil is tied for second in the ECHL with 3 GWGs…Coetzee is second in the league with 76 SOGs…the Walleye’s power play has improved to 17.8% (13th) and have a 85.5% penalty kill rate (7th)…Toledo is still the least penalized team in the ECHL, averaging just 12.4 PIMs a game.
