The second scrimmage of Blackhawks Prospect Camp took place at Johnny’s Ice House West on Thursday.
Matthew O’Connor started for White and Jackson Whistle started for Red. They both made solid saves and both had shutouts going for almost 30 minutes until they were replaced by Matt Tomkins and Brandon Whitney in order to evenly split time in the scrimmage.
Matt Lorito, free agent invitee from Brown University, scored the first goal of the contest with 7:54 remaining in the 2nd period as he collected his own rebound from his shot on a breakaway and fired it past Tomkins to give Red the 1-0 lead. 15 seconds later, Jake Chelios also collected a rebound and got it by Tomkins to make it 2-0 Red. With 3:35 left in the period, Red’s lead increased to 3-0 as Tim O’Brien scored from right out in front of the crease.
In the third period, Whitney made several strong saves for Red to preserve their 3 goal lead. He stopped a dangerous Chris Calnan chance and also stoned Mark McNeill on a breakaway. It wasn’t until there was 4:29 left in the final frame that White cashed in on a good chance. With Tomkins pulled for the 6th attacker, Chris McCarthy spotted the loose puck in the crease and put it home to make it 3-1. Tomkins was pulled again as soon as White gained possession of the puck on the ensuing draw and they netted another goal. Travis Brown’s shot from the left point was re-directed into the back of the net by Luke Curadi with 2:27 remaining. Despite the late push by White, Red was able to hang on for the 3-2 win.

–Justin Holl is a very solid defenseman. He skates very well, is a very good passer and has some good hockey sense. Nick Mattson is also a solid blue liner.
–Robin Norell does a good job of jumping into the play in the offensive zone from the blue line. Rarely does he do that and put himself in a bad position to get back and defend.
–Sam Jardine is a good passer. Outlet passes from him are some of the best at camp.
-The final day of Prospect Camp is now upon us. There won’t be any pre-scrimmage practices like the past two days, but the boys will take to the ice for one last time at 10:00 a.m. for the final scrimmage. Red currently is 2-0 in scrimmage play; they’re looking to make it a trifecta tomorrow morning. I’ll have all the updates on Twitter once again.
