IceHogs Thursday: Close but No Cigar

The IceHogs finished week 16 with a Saturday match-up against a Midwest Division rival and began week 17 with a Martin Luther King Day matinee showdown against one of the top teams in the Western Conference.

icehogs-at-chicago-wolves-logos1Saturday, January 18 at Chicago – The IceHogs were in Rosemont on Saturday evening to take on the Midwest Division rival Chicago Wolves. The home team scored the first goal of the contest courtesy of Nathan Longpre’s third tally of the season. 1:06 later, Pat Mullane tied the game up for Rockford with his third goal of the season.

There wasn’t any more scoring in the game until the third period when Ty Rattie put the Wolves up 2-1 at 12:31 as he deflected in a puck from right out in front of Jason LaBarbera. The Wolves were then able to hang on for the victory.

-Chicago outshot Rockford 36-24.

-The IceHogs went 0-for-4 on the power play and they killed off the Wolves’ lone man advantage.

-IceHogs Jeremy Morin, Alex Broadhurst, Pat Mullane and Klas Dahlbeck all recorded three shots on goal on Saturday night.

-The three stars of the game were:  1 – Ty Rattie (GWG, 4 SOG) 2 – Jason LaBarbera (34 saves) 3 – Nathan Longpre (1 G, +1, 1 SOG).

-The scratches for the IceHogs were:  Brad Mills, Brandon Pirri (both injured), Byron Froese, Wade Brookbank, Bobby Shea (all healthy) and Zach Miskovic (had not arrived yet from trade).

-The lines and D pairs for Rockford were:

icehogs-vs-marlies-logosMonday, January 20 vs. Toronto – Unlike Saturday night, the IceHogs jumped out to a lead in the first period with Alex Broadhurst’s seventh goal of the season as he deflected in a Viktor Svedberg shot from the point.

The Marlies came storming back in the second period as Greg McKegg (PPG) and Spencer Abbott tallied to give the visitors the 2-1 lead. TJ Brennan scored at 4:13 to give the Marlies a 3-1 in the third.

The IceHogs brought the game to within one as Joakim Nordstrom tallied his thirteenth goal of the season while on the power play at 12:42 of the final frame, but the Marlies were able to take the game 3-2.

-Rockford outshot Toronto 42-22; Jason LaBarbera was in net for the IceHogs.

-The IceHogs went 1-for-6 on the power play and the Marlies went 2-for-7 on their man advantages.

-IceHogs winger Terry Broadhurst led the team with eight shots on goal.

-Defenseman Zach Miskovic made his IceHogs debut against the Marlies and recorded an assist on Alex Broadhurst’s goal and was +1.

-The IceHogs’ power play units were:

-The three stars of the game were:   1—Spencer Abbott (G, 2 A, +1, 2 SOG) 2 – Drew MacIntyre (40 saves) 3 – Joakim Nordstrom (G, 1 SOG, 5 PIMs [he fought Sam Carrick in the second period]).
