  • The Blackhawks. Duh.
  • The weird start to the NHL season
  • Depressing medical news around the league

Because of that last bit, this week’s question is:

How can you tell if jelly has gone bad? Because Casey needs some help with this, you guys.

Second Balcony Breakdown: Onto The Next One

Red Wings make him gag.

Red Wings make him gag.

(Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers these commercials.)

Casey and I return with the second round edition of Second Balcony Breakdown. Casey’s now the one who’s sick this week, so please forgive her general loopiness toward the end of the recording.

Casey and I return with the playoffs edition of Second Balcony Breakdown. Please excuse my failing voice, coughing, and sniffling during this podcast, along with my general grumpiness. I recorded this while battling my yearly spring cold.

Topics include:

  • Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad‘s mullets
  • The Chicago Blackhawks‘ first three games against the Minnesota Wild
  • Me trying to remember the plural of “series” (It’s “series,” by the way. How do you English, guys?)
  • The other, more interesting and hilarious goings-on around the NHL during the playoffs, such as…
  • Jonathan Quick‘s gross giveaway to a Blue
  • Suspensions!
  • The Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators‘ series being a complete shitshow!
  • Coming back to the Blackhawks a bit, we discuss Susannah Collins‘ firing from CSN Chicago and why this was dumb
  • Here is the link to Dan Bernstein‘s article that we bring up during the podcast. I know it’s Bernstein, but he has a point, in this case.
  • The Colorado Avalanche winning the Seth Jones lottery (They better pick Seth Jones, dammit.)
  • And then the podcast falls apart right when the San Jose Sharks scored two goals in nine seconds to put themselves up 5-1 over the Vancouver Canucks
  • The Line Cocktail for this week reflects how I felt last night.
  • Question of the week: Do you think Alain Vigneault will be fired from the Canucks? Why or why not?

So the Chicago Blackhawks clinched the Central Division title, assuring that they wouldn’t fall any further than third in the standings and also guaranteeing home ice advantage in the first round? And they did this while also doing damage to the Detroit Red Wings‘ playoff hopes?

I couldn’t think of a better goodbye for the Red Wings from the Western Conference, really.

Download this podcast (Right-click the link and “Save Link/Target As…” to do so.)

Topics include:

  • Last week’s Blackhawks games against the Nashville Predators (three times!) and St. Louis Blues (thankfully, only one time)
  • How we would solve the problem of the shootout
  • Clinching a playoff berth — aw yeah
  • Jaromir Jagr going to the Boston Bruins
  • Why we’re not impressed with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Marc-Andre Fleury
  • The trade deadline and the hilarity therein, including the Columbus Blue Jackets becoming the Columbus Blue Rangers
  • Should players/teams have to release every single medical detail to the press?
  • The Line Cocktail for this week will be good for you.
  • Question for this week: Now that the Blackhawks are in the playoffs, which Western Conference team would you least like them to meet? Also, if they do make it to the Finals who in the Eastern Conference would you least like them to meet? Why?
  • Me being completely mentally exhausted and blanking out more than once. Sorry, guys.
