And you know we don’t give a fuck it’s not your birthday

Told you we’d be back in less than a year.

Yes, we return with another edition of Second Balcony Breakdown, recorded slightly after the Chicago Blackhawks game against the Calgary Flames — so forgive us for sounding exhausted, because we were.

  • Congratulating everyone’s favorite drunk uncle, Pat Foley, on his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame (here is the article I was talking about, chronicling his life — it’s an interesting read)
  • The Blackhawks’ games against the Detroit Red Wings (bleh), Dallas Stars (ha!), and Calgary Flames (woo!)
  • The end of The Game 87.7 in Chicago
  • Sad/anger-inducing news from around the NHL, which leads to me to declare that next week’s podcast will be full of puppies and rainbows because I CAN’T TAKE THIS SHIT ANYMORE. TWO WEEKS OF SAD NEWS MAKES ME GO INTO CAPS LOCK.
  • The Line Cocktail for this week is dedicated to this guy:

Good job, kid.

We also forgot a question for this week. Oops. So… maybe you should send us questions for us to answer next week? Think of it as our holiday gift to you, since we’re not going shopping on Black Friday to get you nerds anything. Fuck that.

Topics include:

  • Remembering 9-11 victims Grant “Ace” Bailey and Mark Bavis. If you’d like, please donate to Ace Bailey’s Childrens Foundation and the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation.
  • We didn’t talk about Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak, or Lokomotiv all that much during the summer, so we go over the summer of 2011 on this podcast.
  • Then we go lighter, because I should only cry once on this podcast.
  • Corey Crawford and Niklas Hjalmarsson got re-signed. We discuss their contracts.
  • These dumbasses on this team we root for are back in town and going to other sports games wearing awful things (Bryan Bickell) and not holding children correctly (Andrew Shaw)
  • Teuvo Teravainen is the only reason I care about this weekend’s training camp and Monday’s Training Camp Festival.
  • Other happenings around the NHL, including:
  • The Philadelphia Flyers proving once and for all that they don’t know how the salary cap works by signing Dan Cleary
  • Terrible jerseys from both Team Canada and the Buffalo Sabres
  • The Nashville Perdaters
  • The carnival sideshow that is the Calgary Flames, including Miikka Kiprusoff‘s official retirement and Brian Burke‘s hiring as the President of Hockey Operations.
  • Speaking of Burke, you need to read this.
  • John Tavares is named the New York Islanders‘ captain. We both thought this happened months ago, but apparently not.
  • Nazem Kadri re-signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs because he had no other choice.
  • The Florida Panthers reportedly offered Tim Thomas a tryout contract. They’re also reportedly talking to Ilya Bryzgalov. If there is a Hockey God, he will put both of them on this team.
  • Behind The B is a really interesting look at the behind-the-scenes workings of the Boston Bruins, and you should check it out.
  • And now… HOCKEY LADY BUTTS. Okay, not really. But Casey does talk about how she wants to marry Tessa Bonhomme. (Here is Bonhomme’s Ottawa Citizen photo shoot.)
  • We congratulate the AIHL Goodall Cup Champions, the Sydney Ice Dogs!

I’d Like To Report A Robbery: Blackhawks 3, Flames 2 (SO)

Yes, officer, I saw this man running away with two points. (Photo: Bridget Samuels/flickr)

On a night where the Blackhawks deserved to get exactly zero points out of this game, they somehow came away with two, and it was all thanks to Ray Emery.

Emery saw a career-high 47 shots and stopped 45 of them before blanking the Calgary Flames in the shootout. Remember, this is a guy who was last in net two weeks ago against the Phoenix Coyotes. Guess his hip is good and oiled now.

Warmups: Flames On The Side Of My Face

I didn’t know what picture to use, so have a photo of Marcus Kruger. (Photo: Bridget Samuels/flickr)

  • The Chicago Blackhawks take on the Calgary Flames tonight at 9:00pm CT. The game will be on Comcast Sportsnet in Chicago.
  • Previews: NHL, Chicago Tribune, Second City Hockey
  • Ray Emery will more than likely be in net for the Blackhawks, but it hasn’t been confirmed. (@TramyersCSN) Miikka Kiprusoff will be in goal for the Flames. Pretend to be shocked by this information. (@RogMillions)
  • Injury Report: Daniel Carcillo (knee) is still expected to be out until late February. Michal Rozsival is still questionable with a lower-body injury, as is Dave Bolland, who suffered an injury against the Canucks last night. For the Flames, Sven Baertschi is out with a hip injury, while Anton Babchuk will be sitting with a back injury.
  • I’m suffering through a migraine right now, so forgive me for the shortness of this preview.

Coach Q Gets 600th Win Against Flames

I love when wins make good things happen.

The Hawks pulled out a 4 to 2 win over Calgary to not only give Joel Quenneville his 600th career win (he is the 10th coach to do so) but this win also put them ahead of the Wild in the Western Conference.

-Montador, Kane, Hossa, and Hjalmarsson all scored points last night.

-Emery made 22 saves.

Back to Coach Q, here are some tidbits about his career, following his 600th win as coach:

-He is 161-81-32 in Chicago

-He is the 2nd fastest to reach his 600th win in League history. (Scotty Bowman did it in 1,002 games; Q in 1,113)

Overall, a good night for everyone. Seeing that the Blackhawks were able to pull out the win to bring them back up to the 1st spot in the conference made my long night TONS better. Pats on the back and cupcakes to everyone!
