Second Balcony Breakdown: Go Kaner, It’s (The Day After) Ya Birthday

And you know we don't give a fuck it's not your birthday

And you know we don’t give a fuck it’s not your birthday

Told you we’d be back in less than a year.

Yes, we return with another edition of Second Balcony Breakdown, recorded slightly after the Chicago Blackhawks game against the Calgary Flames — so forgive us for sounding exhausted, because we were.

Topics include:

  • Congratulating everyone’s favorite drunk uncle, Pat Foley, on his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame (here is the article I was talking about, chronicling his life — it’s an interesting read)
  • The Blackhawks’ games against the Detroit Red Wings (bleh), Dallas Stars (ha!), and Calgary Flames (woo!)
  • The end of The Game 87.7 in Chicago
  • Sad/anger-inducing news from around the NHL, which leads to me to declare that next week’s podcast will be full of puppies and rainbows because I CAN’T TAKE THIS SHIT ANYMORE. TWO WEEKS OF SAD NEWS MAKES ME GO INTO CAPS LOCK.
  • The Line Cocktail for this week is dedicated to this guy:

Good job, kid.

We also forgot a question for this week. Oops. So… maybe you should send us questions for us to answer next week? Think of it as our holiday gift to you, since we’re not going shopping on Black Friday to get you nerds anything. Fuck that.

  • What took us so long to return (SPOILER: it was my fault)
  • The Blackhawks. Duh.
  • The weird start to the NHL season
  • Depressing medical news around the league
  • THE MUMPS, THOUGH.
  • The Winter Classic and the new Road to the NHL Winter Classic show on Epix. Here’s the teaser video, if you haven’t seen it yet:

  • Potential salary cap problems
  • Potential NHL expansion… to Las Vegas?
  • Has the AHL figured out how to kill the shootout?
  • My trip to Tampa Bay and my upcoming trip to Columbus
  • And, perhaps most importantly, Casey’s “bro fridge” and the problems therein

Because of that last bit, this week’s question is:

How can you tell if jelly has gone bad? Because Casey needs some help with this, you guys.

Casey and I return for what turned out to be the loopiest Second Balcony Breakdown yet, thanks to certain things mentioned at the beginning of the podcast. Yeeeeah.

  • Nathan Walker is a precious Australian gift to the NHL, and don’t let anyone tell you differently.
  • Evgeni Malkin is a smart cookie about his answer to “the gay question.”
  • Louis Leblanc‘s girlfriend yells at the Canadiens for cutting him. Did I mention his girlfriend is Aleksandra Wozniak?

Casey and I return with a short (for us — it’s still a little over an hour long) Second Balcony Breakdown podcast. We were exhausted by our busy weekends, so please excuse our ramblings.

Second Balcony Breakdown: Onto The Next One

Red Wings make him gag.

Red Wings make him gag.

(Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers these commercials.)

Casey and I return with the second round edition of Second Balcony Breakdown. Casey’s now the one who’s sick this week, so please forgive her general loopiness toward the end of the recording.

Five Reasons To Hate The Detroit Red Wings

Lots of this please and thank you / Flickr: the_mel

I suspect that, for most of you, I don’t have to give you any reasons to hate the Blackhawks’ next victim opponents. It’s rather like putting on underpants — it’s necessary, it’s automatic, and if you don’t, you feel pretty damn uncomfortable. But humor me — here are five reasons to hate the Winged Wheel even more than you already do.

Second Balcony Breakdown: Patrick Kane For Lady Byng

Yes. This guy. (Photo: Mel Boysen/flickr)

Yes. This guy. (Photo: Mel Boysen/flickr)

Casey and I return with an all new Second Balcony Breakdown, which was recorded earlier than usual (around 3pm instead of our usual 9pm start time) because Casey had a championship game to run off to.

(For spoilers as to how it went, click here!)

Download this podcast (Right-click on the link and “Save Target/Link as…” to do so.)

Topics include:

  • Patrick Kane as a viable candidate for the Lady Byng Trophy. Seriously.
  • Last week’s Chicago Blackhawks games against the Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, and St. Louis Blues
  • Why Casey hates dislikes Viktor Stalberg
  • Why the goalie “controversy” is stupid
  • Me crying about the power play
  • Other shit that happened around the league, including Nate Thompson demonstrating why visors are important, the hit on Brad Marchand, and Steve Ott being a disgusting individual
  • The Line Cocktail for this week is sad, like Brandon Bollig being on the top line
  • Question for this week: Who would you least like to see the Blackhawks take on in the first round? And this doesn’t have to be the team you’re most afraid of in the first round, either. You can have your own reasons for why.

LOL BYE DETROIT: Blackhawks 3, Red Wings 2 (SO)

I use this picture to anger Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk. (Photo: Bridget Samuels/flickr)

So the Chicago Blackhawks clinched the Central Division title, assuring that they wouldn’t fall any further than third in the standings and also guaranteeing home ice advantage in the first round? And they did this while also doing damage to the Detroit Red Wings‘ playoff hopes?

I couldn’t think of a better goodbye for the Red Wings from the Western Conference, really.
