The final week of the 2013-14 AHL regular season saw the IceHogs play in 2 final contests with their playoff hopes barely alive. The IceHogs needed to win both games and get some help from other teams—mainly the Oklahoma City Barons—in order to make the post season.

The IceHogs did not fare very well in their games during week 28 of the AHL schedule. With 3 important contests over the weekend, they dropped 2 of them, which set them back in their race to the playoffs.

Casey and I return to Second Balcony Breakdown with actual news, for the most part, because it’s almost hockey season. Thank goodness.

Topics include:

  • Remembering 9-11 victims Grant “Ace” Bailey and Mark Bavis. If you’d like, please donate to Ace Bailey’s Childrens Foundation and the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation.
  • We didn’t talk about Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak, or Lokomotiv all that much during the summer, so we go over the summer of 2011 on this podcast.
  • Then we go lighter, because I should only cry once on this podcast.
  • Corey Crawford and Niklas Hjalmarsson got re-signed. We discuss their contracts.
  • These dumbasses on this team we root for are back in town and going to other sports games wearing awful things (Bryan Bickell) and not holding children correctly (Andrew Shaw)
  • Teuvo Teravainen is the only reason I care about this weekend’s training camp and Monday’s Training Camp Festival.
  • Other happenings around the NHL, including:
  • The Philadelphia Flyers proving once and for all that they don’t know how the salary cap works by signing Dan Cleary
  • Terrible jerseys from both Team Canada and the Buffalo Sabres
  • The Nashville Perdaters
  • The carnival sideshow that is the Calgary Flames, including Miikka Kiprusoff‘s official retirement and Brian Burke‘s hiring as the President of Hockey Operations.
  • Speaking of Burke, you need to read this.
  • John Tavares is named the New York Islanders‘ captain. We both thought this happened months ago, but apparently not.
  • Nazem Kadri re-signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs because he had no other choice.
  • The Florida Panthers reportedly offered Tim Thomas a tryout contract. They’re also reportedly talking to Ilya Bryzgalov. If there is a Hockey God, he will put both of them on this team.
  • Behind The B is a really interesting look at the behind-the-scenes workings of the Boston Bruins, and you should check it out.
  • And now… HOCKEY LADY BUTTS. Okay, not really. But Casey does talk about how she wants to marry Tessa Bonhomme. (Here is Bonhomme’s Ottawa Citizen photo shoot.)
  • We congratulate the AIHL Goodall Cup Champions, the Sydney Ice Dogs!

On this episode of Second Balcony Breakdown, Casey and I are surprised with the amount of hockey talk we can do even in the middle of August.

Topics include:

  • Congratulating Bryan Bickell and his wife, Amanda, on their wedding
  • Rules on how to survive the Blackhawks Convention with your sanity mostly intact
  • Patrick Kane‘s interview where he expresses remorse for being a dumbass
  • Teuvo Teravainen kicking ass with Team Finland at the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp
  • Russia and its anti-gay laws leading up to the Olympics
  • Evgeni Malkin isn’t going to Russia, and neither is Pavel Datsyuk or Alex Ovechkin. So stop asking about it.
  • The Phoenix Coyotes are closing their sale. Seattle wants an NHL team. Expansion? Yes, of course.
  • Patrick Sharp and his wife are expecting another girl in October. This leads us to making fun of Brent Seabrook.
  • Also congratulating Niklas Hjalmarsson on his wedding — which we completely forgot about. Whoops!

Even though I was initially upset about it, now I feel like I’m talking to my mother on the phone whenever someone brings up this game.

Prospect Camp Preview: Forwards

Brandon Saad returns to prospect camp. (Photo: the_mel/flickr)

The Blackhawks have released a general preview for camp that looks at the numbers. It’s full of interesting and sometimes quirky facts, and it offers a great opportunity for me to open my own preview  by looking at some numbers of my own. Out of the 27 forwards attending prospect camp, 14 are Free Agent Invitees–which means the remaining 13 are in the Blackhawks’ system. 14 of those 27 have been playing college hockey, 2 played in the USHL, 1 in the WHL, 2 in the OHL, 1 in high school, 1 in the QMJHL, and the remaining 6 come from European Leagues (1 SM-Liiga, 3 MHL, 1 SEL, 1 SUI-JR). Of the 6 Illinoisans attending camp, 4 of them are forwards. The forwards have one of the notable legacy attendees–right wing Chris Calnan, the Blackhawks’ 79th overall draft pick this year, who just happens to be Jeremy Roenick’s nephew.

Now let’s take a look at the forward attendees one-by-one:

Blackhawks Select Teuvo Teravainen

Last year, Pittsburgh native Brandon Saad slid into the second round of the 2011 Draft — and into a Chicago Blackhawks jersey. This has been seen as the steal of that draft.

This year in Pittsburgh, Saad helped the Blackhawks welcome another player who slid down the draft and into the team’s lap, center Teuvo Teravainen.
