Cancer sucks.
You know it. I know it.
If you haven’t been directly affected by cancer, trust me — you know someone who has.
Why? Because it SUCKS.
That’s why the good people at Chicks Who Give A Puck have teamed up with Second City Hockey to present the Chicago Pucks Cancer road watch/fundraiser event! 100% of the proceeds will be going to the Young Survival Coalition. They are a charity devoted to “increas[ing] the quality and quantity of life for women diagnosed with breast cancer ages 40 and under.”
On February 12th, come down to the Bottom Lounge (1375 W Lake Street, Chicago) starting at 6pm to watch the Blackhawks take on the Phoenix Coyotes (puck drop is at 7pm). During the event, there will be a live drawing for prizes. You will receive one (1) ticket for every $5 donated. At the event, the prizes (which can be viewed here) will be on display. To enter the drawing for a particular item, you drop your ticket into the bin in front of the prize, and if your ticket is drawn, you win! The drawings will take place immediately after the game, and you must be present to win. To RSVP for the event via Twitter, click here.
But, Kat, you might say. I can’t make it to the live event, because I am not excellent or I live somewhere not even close to Chicago! Well, lucky for you, there’s also an online drive going on until February 28, 2011! For every $5 donated through PayPal at ChicagoPucksCancer@cwgap.com, you will receive one (1) ticket for the online drawing.
There is also a fun initiative started on Twitter by the always-spectacular Hockey Broad called “Money On The Board,” or #MOTB, which was inspired by Columbus Blue Jackets fans. People are pledging a certain dollar amount for everything from goals and assists to healthy scratches and the number of times a player is caught dropping F-bombs on camera. As of right now, there are 86 pledges covering 24 teams and 57 players. You can see the full list of pledges here. In the last 4 years, I know 3 people at least who have battled cancer.
early 2007, it was my mother with thyroid cancer. They removed a tumour and her thyroid. She pretty much ended up retiring because of it.
2008 – 2 people locally battled cancer, one was breast cancer, the other I THINK was lung cancer. Both are in remission now.
Depending on what happens with my MOTB stuff, they may get more than the initial pledge. But I still hope my pledge = I have to pay out BIG TIME.
I love this. So so so much.
